In 2009, we organized the first Agile Roots conference with the theme of refocusing on the Agile Manifesto, rooting Agile in the past and guiding Agile growth into the future.
The first Agile Roots exceeded my expectations. Our goal was to have a conference supporting the theme with content useful to technologists, product owners, managers and executives. A sub-theme was ‘There is only Us’ and where possible we tried to put together a program that addressed cross-cutting concerns.
I feel we put on a great conference with some of the preeminent personalities of the Agile movement in an intimate setting. I think everyone left in high spirits and with new ideas. I know I did, but…
A lot has happened since we started planning Agile Roots. The software craftsmanship movement; Agile system administration/Devops; serious flaws of Agile and Scrum; Software Engineering Method and Theory, the list goes on and I’m sure I am missing plenty.
When we started planning for this year, the theme that kept re-emerging as most interesting, relevant and necessary is the notion of value creation.
What does it mean to make ‘great software’? Software people love to use? Software that is a pleasure to make?
More and more people know how to test drive development, but how do we decide what we should build? Can we test drive our business development? Can we develop programs that capture the imagination and marketplace they are strategically intended to while leveraging all the advantages of finely tuned Agile development process? We want to help move Agile from not just ‘how’, but ‘why’. Why do we build the software we build, and why do we build it the way that we do.
We have started to put together a program towards that end. We have commitments from Luke Hohmann and Jeff Patton, who we believe are on the leading edge of value creation in the software process.
But we still have plenty of room for talks and we hope you have something to share. If you were there last year, or heard stories, you’ll know we’re up for experiments, so if you have an idea that you’d like to have the opportunity to share with ~300 Agilists, we would love to hear about it. We’re interested in anything you think brings value and joy to the software process, from the deeply technical, to product and portfolio strategy, to the philosophical. How do you build great software!
The conference will be June 14-15. We’ll take submissions until April 20th and we’ll try to get the schedule finalized and posted around the first week of May. (you’ll know for sure if you are speaking before that)
Finally, this year we will have dedicated space for sponsors who wish to support Agile Roots. If your company is doing well, share the abundance with the community and help Agile Roots 2010 raise the bar.

We are happy to announce that the Agile Roots 2010 conference will be held on June 14th and 15th at Noah’s, just south of Salt Lake City.
We will take over the entire Noah’s facility. Noah’s is a state of the art meeting center with plenty of lounge areas to have “hallway” conversations and interact with fellow Agilistas.
